Hickory Dickory Dock Poem is one of the most popular nursery rhyme in the English language. It is also known as “Hickety Dickety Dock”. This rhyme is believed to have originated from counting-out rhymes. Counting-out rhymes are those rhymes, that are used to count out a player from the game, such as Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe. Also, in the earlier time, the farmers of Westmorland, a place in North-West England used to count their sheep with numbers, Hevera(8), Devera(9) and Dick(10). This could have also played a part in the rhyme’s formation.
This poem uses alliteration, which is used by the children to mimic the sound of the clock. “Hickory Dickory Dock”, the nursery rhyme, is used to teach children to tell time. And whenever the clock strikes the hour, the mouse runs down the clock. With each hour that passes, the clock chimes and down the mouse runs. This repeats until the twelfth hour, because this time when the clock chimes, the mouse hurriedly runs down the clock, and the clock asks the mouse why is he running away. The mouse tells the clock that the clock scares the mouse and the mouse tells the clock that it has to go away!
