This is one of the great Arabian Night stories for children.Once upon a time, a fisherman lived in a village. He had a small family of his wife and three children. He led his life with his earnings from fishing. One day, as he cast his net into the sea, he could not feel any fish in the net. He waited for some time and pulled the net out but there was nothing in the net. He became worried and thought to himself, “What will I say to my wife and children? Today, my family and I will starve without food.” He tried again and again but all his efforts were in vain.
Finally, he cast the net without any hope into the sea. After a few minutes, when he pulled the net, he felt that the net was heavy. His face brightened and it was full of hope. “It looks there is a big fish in my net,” he wondered. But when he pulled out the net from the sea, he saw a big, old jar made up of brass was trapped in the net. The Jar was closed with a beautiful lid. Soon, he opened the Jar. On hearing that, the fisherman became very scared. But he gathered his courage and said. “You are so big. How can I satisfy your hunger?” The wicked genie who was very hungry did not bother and asked him to come near so that it could gobble up the fisherman.
The fisherman said, ‘‘I am very poor. I didn’t do any harm to you. Why do you want to kill me Genie?” But the genie did not pay any attention and said. “I would not hear your words again. Come near me quick!” The fisherman thought for a while and finally, he got an idea to escape from the genie. He said, “You can eat me! But before you eat me, you have to answer my question”. “Okay!” the genie agreed.
The fisherman asked him how such a huge genie could be inside a small Jar. The genie replied that he could make himself as tiny as he wanted to be. The fisherman wanted to test it. The genie was ready to show him his strengths. So, he made himself as small as he could and jumped into the jar.
Suddenly, the fisherman closed the jar immediately and threw the Jar into the Sea. So the wicked Genie had locked inside the Jar once again. The fisherman was very happy that he was saved and he escaped from the danger with his presence of mind. You may also like to read, Ali Baba And The Forty Thieves Story.
