And the tree stopped bearing fruits and leaves fell off. Only a stump of wood remained. But even then the parrot never left the tree. The parrot still resided in the old fig tree. Whereas all the other parrots had left to find a better tree. Then one day, the tree asked the parrot that why hadn’t he deserted the tree like the others had. The parrot simply replied that the tree was a friend of the parrot’s. “You have fed me for many years. And you have provided me for many years. Why should I forsake you now?” the parrot told the fig tree. Now, the parrot did not know that the questions were being asked by Sakka, the Hindu Indra. “I am pleased by your answer,” Sakka said coming into his true form. “Your feelings have impressed me greatly. I will grant you a wish. Now, tell me what do you want? Whatever you wish, shall be done.” The parrot said that he wanted the fig tree, which was the parrot’s friend to have it leaves and fruits back. “Bless him with the ability to bear fruit all year long.
